So, you want to chase down the mighty rooster on the fly, eh?!   Keep in mind your guide (your best chances of getting one will be with a seasoned rooster fish guide) will have his/her own gear suggestions / personal preferences.  What I have provided here is a good base line of fly gear to bring on your trip!

Where to go? The trip that I took to land my BIG 45+ lbs roosters can be yours as well : Pursuit Anglers guiding service

Gear Guide

Rods :  10 wt or 11 wt rod  – I use the Thomas and Thomas Exocett

Reel: You will need a smooth drag and large arbour reel for these fish. Should have the capability to hold the line and 450 yards of + 45lb gelspun backing . Abel Reels  super series and sealed drag salt.

I also love the F1 from Ross reels .

Fly Line:   A matching 10 or 11 wt WF tropical line will do, you can get  from Cortland Lines

Tippet:  CORTLAND Saltwater Fluorocarbon in   60lb, 40lb, 30lb , 20 lb – you can build your own leaders with this combo.

Flies: mullet patterns are what worked best for me (about 9 inches in length), sardine patterns,  clousers , and crease fly’s  work well too.

Using Mustad salt water hooks in  3/0-6
